Illustrating scripture, 1/24. "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Acts 2:42. I designed this series about a year ago for Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, in order to illustrate their mission statement. The concept is base on using traditional religious iconography and other recognizable shapes and motifs, thereby referencing the history and the church and the gospel, and reinterpreting them in a loose, deconstructed/reconstructed kind of way. I wanted to use lighter media (watercolor and ink) to depict icons traditionally portrayed using heavier materials, quite often (glass and lead, for example). In so doing, I sought to bridge the gap between the historical art of the church and contemporary art, which are sometimes so polarized, especially within the church.

Tonight Luke told Charlotte that he was thinking about visiting her morning chapel at school tomorrow. "Dad. DEFINITELY DO NOT come to my school. NO other parents come to chapel." I'm flash forwarding ten years to when he tells her he wants to chaperone her first dance. #shiningchar

#tbt to last spring, when I had the opportunity to illustrate a history of famous dogs for the @earlyworksfam summer exhibit. Most fun project ever! I definitely have a few favorite canines on the timeline. The exhibit is still up, so head over for a visit if you haven't already.
