One of the fun things about being part of Dixie is that I have gotten to make new friends and reconnect with old ones, like @vaughanspanjerart . Vaughan was my pledge sister and also had the acclaimed position of Chi O tee shirt designer. She's always been the coolest and most genuine girl, and today's her birthday! So wish her a happy birthday and feast your eyes on her beautiful work on her own account and at @dixie_design !

This morning Charlotte woke up and told me she thought her feet were just a tiny bit bigger and that she could jump just a little bit higher than when she was four. She is bright, kind, loyal, and creative, and we never expected how much joy she'd bring with her when she was born five years ago. Happy birthday to my heart!

Today we got to enjoy time with my wonderful extended family at a reunion in Pine Apple, Alabama. Afterwards we went over to Dellmont, an antebellum house built by my great-grandmother's great-grandfather Robert Yeldell and preserved by my cousins. The house was raided during the war but not burned. After Robert died, his son and daughter-in-law lived there, and cheer was brought back to Dellmont. Said one relative, "Do you recall the grand dance floor at Cousin Janie Yeldell’s? (how beautiful is her home now since its redecoration last summer, so massive and mansion-like!) Do you remember Dr. Joe Childs from Florida and I his partner, in the “Snake Dance” he introduced? When he returned home after summer vacations, Leon Seale and I led the dance. Remember Joe Child’s graceful waltzing, equal to that of Reggar Knight visiting home from Texas and also that of Cousin John Yeldell? Remember Paul Yeldell and I did the schottische? We were the only ones who knew that German dance with its skip and glide to 2/4 measure, so we put on a “floor show.” Some gala times we all had in those years in that home!"

If you value your own sanity and the respect of your family, DO NOT attempt to dye any clothes that your kids will wear. Sure, it's somehow already 10 at night and I have three dresses with average dye jobs as part of the girls' Halloween costumes, (wait, PART OF?), but here's how it all went down. 1. Dyed all three dresses pink, green, and blue, respectively. 2. Patted myself on back for keeping Farris from ripping open pink dye all over floor. 3. Realized that pink dress and green dress had streaks and spots. 4. Used color remover to remove color from those so I could start over. Green dress turned slime-yellow. 5. Followed up with bleach. In the process, splashed bleach onto perfectly dyed blue dress. Green dress turned old-wallpaper yellow. 6. Used another color remover on green dress. It turned white again. 7. Re-dyed pink dress and green dress. Luke's voice from across the room said pink solution had "substrates floating to top" and we should "remove dress immediately." Pink dress still has spots. 8. Soaked blue dress in bleach. It didn't work. 9. Soaked blue dress in color remover. Turned purple. 10. Literally threw hands in air. Patted back for not cussing. 11. Soaked blue dress in bleach again, finally lightened up. 12. Re-dyed blue dress. 13. Used bleach to lighten pink dress and spots. 14. Ran out of pink dye so used Crystal Light Pink Lemonade drink mix. Turned a nice shade of peach-pink-ish. Whatever. 15. Noticed blue dye on own shirt. 16. Rinsed all three dresses and put in washing machine. 17. Got glass of wine. #mixedmediamonday
