Peter Spier

I've never posted about illustrator Peter Spier, but he is one of my favorites. Mom has several of his books and we grew up with them. i think many of them are now out of print. Noah's Ark won a Caldecott.

We had that book growing up. I remember going back and looking at the illustrations over and over. The expressions and all the details are great. I remember when I finally realized that there are almost no words in the book. The drawings tell the story so well that you don't need any.

Yes! Noah's Ark had no words at all. So the illustrations had to work that much harder. We had the book Oh, Were They Ever Happy!, about some kids whose parents go out for the day, and they decide to paint the house. I agree, the details are so wonderful... seeing all the tools in the garage, all the many different colors of paint that the kids used on the house... I'll see if I can post some images of that one. I've actually got Mom's copy down here.. need to scan it.
