Seventeen years ago, when Luke and I were sophomores in high school, sharing melancholy letters about change and loss and the joys and pain of Sting lyrics, it would have been hard to imagine what specifically the future would hold for us. All I knew is that I really liked him and was starting to love him. Two years later I knew I wanted to marry him. I got to grow up with Luke around, and my girls are getting to do the same thing. I am so thankful they are learning and benefitting from his love of life and his optimism, that he shares what he loves with them, and that he seeks to really know them. He knows how to serve and he brings the fun. I had to crop this photo to keep it decent, but if you saw the entire thing you'd see Luke painting a playhouse for three little girls running around in their skivvies and taking joy in helping. Happy Father's Day to Luke!

Happy Father's Day to my dad, who always encouraged me to tag along. This was how he taught me those things which are important to him. From him I learned that I could do anything I wanted to do, that I should set the bar high and work heartily as unto the Lord, that I should give generously, that I should extend grace. This photo was taken 24 years ago, right after we moved outside of town to a beautiful--but flat and dusty--valley with no shade. Through his gift of seeing both the forest and the trees, Dad has since transformed the whole place. Since then he has added rows of tall pines, trees and plants that yield Japanese pears, apples, figs, blackberries, and blueberries, a pond full of brim, a playhouse, a fort, a "shack," a barn, countless animals and countless times of hosting friends and family that have added beauty and value to the place. Dad has the ability to catch a vision, see it through, and include others along the way. This is just one of the many things I admire about him and for which I am so grateful.

Go barracudas! That's Speedy on the left, and Fearless on the right. #shiningchar finished second in her heat, and #farrisofthemall swam the whole way without holding the rope!
